Alright, first things first— congrats! You survived the madness of wedding planning, dodged awkward family conversations, and made it out with your sanity (mostly) intact. Now it’s time for the real fun— your honeymoon.
But before you start dreaming about sipping Mai Tais on a beach or exploring cobblestone streets hand-in-hand, let’s talk about something way less fun but super important: your honeymoon carry-on essentials.
Honeymoon Travel Essentials: What to Pack in Your Carry-On
We’ve been there. Packing in a post-wedding haze, running on three hours of sleep, and forgetting half the stuff we swore we wouldn’t. Trust us— having a well-packed carry-on can save your entire honeymoon! You don’t want to show up in Bali with no swimsuit and your phone charger still plugged in back home.
Let’s break down exactly what needs to go in your honeymoon carry-on, so you can land looking fresh, organized, and most importantly, ready to relax.
1. Travel Documents & IDs (Don’t Leave These…)
You’d be surprised how many people forget their passports, boarding passes, or worse— the requirements to enter the country. We actually have a cousin that realized that she brought her expired passport for a previous trip. She wasn’t smiling after that and, you probably guessed, wasn’t refunded for her plane tickets.
Here’s what you must pack:
- Passports and/or IDs
- Travel insurance documents (if you have insurance)
- Boarding passes (printed or digital)
- Hotel confirmations (printed or digital)
- Travel visas (if needed)
- COVID-19 or other required vaccination documents (if applicable)
Pro Tip: Keep everything in a travel wallet or document organizer. At the very least, reserve a compartment in your carry-on bag for these essentials items that you will need so they are not missing.
2. A Change of Clothes (Just In Case…)
We always pack at least one outfit in our carry-on or personal bag. Why? Because if you don’t, the airline usually ends up losing your check-in luggage. We honestly reccomend packing this in your personal bag if possible, as there is always a chance that your carry-on may have to be checked-in due to baggage storage limits on the plane.
Here’s what we recommend:
- Comfy outfit (something light and wrinkle resistant)
- Swimsuit (if you are going somewhere tropical or with a pool)
- Undies and socks (trust us on this one…)
- Sleepwear (you definitely don’t want to be sleeping in jeans)
If your luggage does get delayed, at least you’ll be prepared for 24 hours or greater.
3. Toiletries & Personal Care Must-Haves
You’re not packing for a backcountry hike— you’re heading somewhere to be pampered. But TSA still doesn’t care about your newlywed glow.
Stick to travel-size versions and pack these in a clear, zip-top bag:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Facial wipes or micellar water
- Deodorant
- Mini moisturizer
- Travel-sized sunscreen (don’t forget this if you are going somewhere with harsh sun)
- Lip balm
- Hairbrush or comb
- Travel-sized shampoo
- Mini perfume/cologne itemizer
- Makeup basics
- Back-up contacts (and travel-sized solution) if you use them. Additionally, you’ll want to think about bringing your glasses in case something goes wrong with your contacts.
These are some helpful items to invest in for your trip:
4. Medication & Mini First Aid Kit
Whether it’s jet lag, a surprise cold sore, or post-wedding migraines, you don’t want to be digging through foreign pharmacies on day one. It seems that you always will get a headache when you forget to bring Tylenol. We’ve personally been sick a couple times on our own trips and we feel like we have a solid list of what is necessary.
Here’s what to bring:
- Prescriptions (in original containers)
- Pain relievers
- Nausea/Motion sickness meds
- Anti-diarrheal meds
- Melatonin (for jet lag)
- Band-aids
- Hand sanitizer & wipes
In our opinion, this list is a total lifesaver. It shouldn’t take up hardly any space in your bag and should save so much hassle during times you are not feeling well.
5. Electronics & Chargers (AKA Lifelines)
Yes, honeymoons are about unplugging… but also, you still needs GPS, a search platform for ideas, and the ability to post on social media if that’s your thing.
So pack these:
- Phone & Charger
- Power bank (get a good one that lasts)
- Universal travel adapter
- Headphones or earbuds
- Tablet or e-reader
- AirTags (for checked bags)
Here are some essential items we pack ourselves:
Apple USB-C Woven Charge Cable (2 m)
Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable (2 m)
Bonus tip: Keep a zippered pouch for cords and cables to prevent tangling.
6. Snacks & Hydration Helpers
You’ll thank yourself when you’re three hours into a layover and everything is closed except a vending machine with overpriced snacks.
Here’s what we usually pack:
- Protein bars
- Trail mix or nuts
- Empty water bottle
- Electrolyte packets (great for jet lag & dehydration)
These are our favorite water bottles to bring for travel:
YETI Rambler 26 oz Bottle, Vacuum Insulated, Stainless Steel with Straw Cap
- Pro Tip: If you’re heading somewhere tropical, these electrolyte packs are a game changer. They help with hydration as well as if you get sick or even hungover.
7. Comfort Items for the Flight
Even in business class, flying for 8+ hours, especially a red eye, turns anyone into a zombie. So, stack the odds in your favor.
Essentials for next-level comfort:
- Neck pillow
- Eye mask & earplugs
- Travel blanket or large scarf
- Compression socks (especially for those at risk for clots)
- Chewing gum
These are some essential comfort items for us:
8. Something Romantic or Fun (This is a Honeymoon After All)
A little extra goes a long way! Yes, you’ve already had your big romantic moment at the altar. But adding a sweet surprise or fun item to your carry-on can set the tone for your honeymoon.
Think about:
- A handwritten note or card for your partner
- Mini honeymoon journal (to jot down funny moments or bucket list memories during your trip)
- Cute travel games or a pack of cards
- A sexy little surprise outfit or item…
Pro Tip: Consider investing in a good tripod to take your pictures together, especially when it is just the two of you. Of course, you can ask other tourists to assist, but it can sometimes be impossible for that person to know your photo preferences, and it can lead to frustrating moments. We definitely have a handful of experience with this.
9. Travel-Sized Laundry Kit
Okay, this one sounds boring, but stick with us.
Packing a mini laundry kit with:
- A hamper bag
- Stain remover
We tend to wear a lot of white, and we always end up getting a stain or two on our clothes from drinks or other things. These come in very handy for situations like this to remove the stain for the time being:
10. Copies, Backups, and Emergency Info
It is always better to be safe than sorry, especially with your required documentation and emergency items.
Be sure to have these items with you at all times:
- Photocopies of your passports and IDs
- Emergency contacts
- Backup credit card
- Cash
Stick these in a separate pocket from your main stuff. If anything goes missing, you’ll at least have backups.
Final Thoughts: Your Carry-On is Your Honeymoon Lifeline
Alright, here’s the deal. Your checked luggage can get lost, delayed, or straight-up vanish (don’t panic— it’s rare). But your carry-on? That’s your honeymoon survival kit.
With the right essentials, you’ll arrive fresh, fed, and stress-free. Here is a recap of what not to forget to pack in your honeymoon carry-on:
- Travel documents
- Change of clothes
- Toiletries
- Medications
- Chargers and tech
- Snacks
- Comfort items
- Something fun or romantic
- Mini laundry kit
- Backups & emergency info
So yeah, pack smart, stress less, and honeymoon harder. Because let’s face it— once the real world kicks back in, you’ll miss the days of the crazy airport adventures with each other to start off your marriage.
We hope you found this list helpful, and if you did, we appreciate it if you give us a pin! This helps share this list with others who may also find it useful. Packing can be a stressful activity but with an essential list, it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Now go make some memories. And maybe double-check your passport— just saying. If you don’t remember to bring anything, please do not forget your passport!
